“Keeping a diary supports personal development.” - Stefan Sagmeister
Things I have Learned in my Life So Far is a gorgeous project by rockstar designer Stefan Sagmeister. Since discovering it I have started writing again (in a personal capacity), thanks to the aforementioned pearl of wisdom. It echoes quotes like “You can’t manage what you can’t measure” and “To measure is to know,” but somehow it never registered to apply this to a personal context. So thanks Mister Sagmeister!
Each of the points (derived originally from a list in his own journal) are beautifully illustrated - some (like the diary quote) on video (that’s a still from it above). Well worth checking out!
Here are some of the other more poignant points on Sagmeister’s list:
- Everybody always thinks they are right.
- Drugs are fun in the beginning but end up being a drag.
- Money does not make me happy.
- Complaining is silly. Either act or forget.
- Worrying does not help.
To this, I’d add:
No.6 – Pay no mind to the battles you’ve won.
(That’s actually a lyric from Maynard James Keenan’s side project Puscifer, but I like it so much I’d tattoo it on my arm. If I were ten years younger.)
